Eastward Ho! 2019 ASEAN Community Leadership and Partnership Forum


I was invited by the Asia Centre to the 2019 ASEAN Community Leadership and Partnership Forum, held in conjunction with the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok which was organised by Kingsley Strategic Institute ( KSI), ASEAN Business Advisory Council ( ASEAN – BAC), ASEAN Studies Centre, Nation Building Institute and the Asia Centre on the 23rd & 24th June, 2019 at Park Hyatt, Bangkok which was as eye opening experience and a very informative meet.

A series of issues were addressed by renowned personalities like H.E. Anand Panyarachun, Former Prime Minister of Thailand, H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister of Lao PDR, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and former Director-General, World Trade Organisation, Mr. Arin Jira, Chairman ASEAN Business Advisory Council ( ASEAN-BAC) / Vice Chaiman, Federation of Thai Industries/ Co- Chairman, ASEAN CLAPF and Mr. Tan Sri Michael Yeoh.

I am highlighting the issues that were addressed and discussed. They are as follows:-

  • Empowering ASEAN 4.0
  • Digital Trade Connectivity along with Digital Infrastructure
  •  Cyber security
  •  E-commerce activities (Logistics payments)
  • Start ups ( support centre)
  • Foreign Direct Investment ( FDI) through Technology transfer
  • Trade facilitation ( 24 hrs)
  • The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to empower public health care system
  • ASEAN initiative in land stations (for trucks & tourist buses and custom procedure)
  • Single window clearance (digitised)
  • Inclusive growth within ASEAN
  • Non tariff barriers (NTB)
  • Intra ASEAN Trade (2025)
  • South Korea was specifically mentioned as an example which invest 10% of their GDP on  Research and Development (R & D)
  • ASEAN’s next generation – re-imagining ASEAN and fuelling Innovation were extensively discussed.


Indeed a lot can be learned as to how ASEAN is moving forward to shape the future generation.

    How can the NE states and India benefit ? What it can export to the ASEAN COUNTRIES ?
    Will it help in dumping of cheap Chinese goods 🤔

Eastward Ho! BBIN: Multi model connectivity in the BBIN sub region

  The BBIN (Bhutan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal) multi model initiative in the sub region on connectivity should address the following: ·         Economic integration and transport connectivity initiative to strengthen multi model connection in the BBIN. ·         Motor Vehicle Agreement (MVA) ·         Multi model connectivity protocol ·         Connectivity at Integrated Check Posts ( ICPs) with rail network ·         Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) nodal body under Ministry of Home Affairs that is responsible for maintaining and managing border infrastructure is looking to develop rail connect with three of its ICP viz, Raxaul, Petrapole and Jogbani. Eastward Ho! 11th Foundation Day – Integrated Check Post Dawki – Tamabil: A new Dawn

The 11 th Foundation Day Program by the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) on the 21 st March 2023 of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Dawki marks a new beginning for the people of West Jaintia Hills district and its adjoining areas in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. The ICP will be fully operational now with better facilities for bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh as well as movement of passengers across the border to boost tourism, border haat trade etc. The program started with the speech by Shri Aditya Mishra IPS, Chairman of LPAI and was attended by officials from Customs, BSF, SIB, BDO, MIECC, Meghalaya Police, LPAI and other panelists.
